About Arjun
Arjun Mehta studied computer engineering and started his career on backend teams at large tech companies. Over 14 years he has worked on caching, messaging and storage systems, most recently leading the storage layer for a service used by millions of people.
His days are a mix of design reviews, reading and writing design documents, mentoring and on-call rotations. He has written and reviewed dozens of system design docs and been part of many incident responses, which is where he says he learned the most.
Arjun hosts because the path from senior to staff engineer is poorly explained, and because design reviews and post-mortems are some of the best teaching tools in the industry. Everything he shares is anonymized, and no employer's proprietary information is discussed.
What you’ll learn from Arjun
- How to run a design review: requirements, trade-offs and failure modes
- How large services handle traffic, caching and storage
- How post-mortems are written and what teams learn from outages
- What staff engineers spend their time on and how leveling works
